‘Help asbestos victims to secure compensation’
Nov 10 2010 by Abby Alford, Western Mail
WALES has seen the sharpest rise in asbestos-related deaths in the UK – prompting calls for more to be done to help victims and their families claim compensation.
New figures issued by the Health and Safety Executive show the mesothelioma death rate among Welsh men rose from 41.6 per million for the period 2003 to 2005 to 48.5 in 2006 to 2008.
Over the same period the North-West of England and Scotland saw fatalities fall or remain static.
Most victims of the rare cancer, which affects the lining of the lungs and also the lower digestive tract, were tradesmen, including carpenters, joiners, plumbers and electricians, who were exposed to asbestos without their knowledge around 30 to 40 years before diagnosis.
The long delay between exposure and the onset of symptoms can make it difficult for victims and their families to pursue legal action through former employers.
