Asbestos shattered family dreams

My family has known this is a ticking time bomb since my mom was diagnosed with mesothelioma in October 2006. It’s not only workers in the industry who are at risk; it’s also the people who work in clerical positions in buildings where asbestos is present and then taken out unsafely.

This is what happened to my mom when her employer took out asbestos in 1986 from its Burnaby warehouse and allowed workers to remain in and walk through the areas being worked on.

My mom bravely struggled with limited treatment for three years and succumbed in September 2009 at the age of 67.

It was a tragedy for my family, who feel we have been robbed of the “golden years” we all looked forward to.

Not only is my dad robbed, along with my siblings, but so are all our children who enjoyed and loved their grandmother very much.

We need much more education about this disease and we need to ensure that companies are responsible and use utmost safety measures when it’s removed.
